No casualties were reported in the incident.

An auto parts scrap yard in Sharjah was gutted in a fire on Tuesday morning.

The blaze erupted at 4.23am in the emirate’s Industrial Area No. 10, civil defence officials said. All the auto parts stored in the yard were destroyed, triggering a pall of thick, black smoke which caused panic among residents in nearby neighbourhoods.

No casualties were reported in the incident.

Firefighters from Muwailih, Samnan, swung into action and doused the fire in less than an hour, preventing the flames from spreading to other commercial establishments.

Brig Sami Al Naqbi, director-general of Sharjah Civil Defence, said the civil defence — in coordination with the safety department — will be stepping up inspections at scrap businesses in the industrial area. The authorities will ensure that they follow the prescribed safety rules and regulations.

A zero-tolerance approach will be implemented during the crackdown on violators who ignore safety procedures, he said.

He urged the establishments operating in industrial areas to strictly observe fire safety regulations and ensure that materials in warehouses and scrap shops are stored safely.
