A worker in his twenties was accidentally buried alive after a landslide at a construction site in Al Dahan area in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah.
Brigadier Mohammed Abdullah Al Zaabi, director of the RAK civil defence, said the central operations room, alerted of the mishap, immediately dispatched the civil defence and rescue teams to the reported site.
"Heavy sand fell on and totally covered the victim," he said.
The paramedics from the national ambulance reached the site and tried to resuscitate the victim but in vain, he added.
"Initial investigations revealed that the victim was among a group of Asian workers who were busy doing some excavation works at a sand area when the landslide took place all of a sudden."
The manhole was thoroughly filled with sand while one of the workers (the victim) was still locked inside, he stated.
"The worker breathed his last due to the much amount of sand that entirely covered him, and he was unfortunately declared dead on the spot."
Brigadier Al Zaabi cautioned all employers at such sites to take the necessary measures to ensure their workers' safety.
"The deceased was shifted to the morgue of the hospital for burial by relatives as due. The mishap file was referred to the bodies concerned for legal action."
