Police official urged beach-goers to take stock of the sea conditions before planning their trip.

The body of a 17-year-old Emirati boy, who went missing while swimming off Kalba beach on Sunday evening, was found after a 10-hour search by the Sharjah Police.

Col Al Kai Al Hamoudi, director of eastern region police, said that they received a call at the operations room on Sunday at 6.20pm informing them about the missing teenage boy, who was presumed to have drowned while swimming in a strong tide area off the beach.

The police, in coordination with national rescue mission, air wing and coastal guards, launched an intensive search off Kalba coast, which lasted 10 hours. The boy's body was found near the shores of Kalba, was lifted by air wing team, and shifted to Kalba hospital.

Al Hamoudi urged beach-goers to take stock of the sea conditions before planning their trip and avoid swimming in restricted areas.

He said the sea is likely to be rough as summer peaks. "We have deployed rescue units and coastguards on all Sharjah beaches to respond quickly to any such incidents. Signboards that warn beach-goers of strong waves have been installed in various parts," he added. However, beach-goers hardly follow warning instructions and never check the weather forecast to learn about the condition of the sea, causing accidents, he pointed out.

To reduce drowning cases, the Sharjah Police will launch an awareness campaign for beach-goers from today, Al Hamoudi said.
