The Sharjah Education Council has called on private school administrations in the emirate to accept and register Emirati students for the academic year 2018-2019, irrespective of the outcome of the school performance evaluations. The council sent out a circular to this effect to the private schools on August 29.
The Ministry of Education (MoE) had earlier issued a directive, banning the enrollment of Emirati students in 47 private schools across the UAE for the academic year 2018-19 after they scored poor to very poor ratings in the ministry's evaluation.
Dr Saeed Musabah Al Kaabi, Chairman of the Sharjah Education Council, said the ministry's directive does not apply to Sharjah. This comes after coordination between His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and the Ministry of Education to ink an agreement to bring schools under the supervision of the emirate.
After the ministry directive, parents of children studying in the affected schools had questioned the basis of the poor evaluation.
Emirati father of three Mohammed Amran had said: "I was shocked when I saw the list. My children have been at their current school for three years but now I don't know if they will be accepted in September. I can't even contact the school to discuss the issue because the summer vacation has started."
