A growing number of educational scholarships are on offer to UAE students ahead of the upcoming academic school year.
SchoolApply, a Dubai-based edtech startup firm, is offering a $30,000 or a full scholarship to students who want to study at a university abroad.
The Emerging Entrepreneur Scholarship is open to undergraduate or postgraduate students who have a startup idea they want to pursue while they are enrolled at a university.
"The idea for our scholarships is that we want to help smart international students who don't have the means to pursue their dream education. We're trying to give back a little to the students who are trusting us. Hopefully we can get other institutions to follow and award students scholarships," said Daniel Bjarne, co-founder and CEO of SchoolApply,
"It's for students who have a desire to pursue education anywhere in the world. It could also be students who want to come to the UAE to study.
"The scholarship is up to $30,000 and could be a full scholarship - depending on which institution they're going to. We will be awarding it to someone who has an entrepreneurial mindset and who can benefit from an education to realise that idea."
Some of the startup ideas already submitted by students interested in the scholarships include developing a Methane Farming Facility in order to trap methane gas from cow dungs and turn it into a renewable energy source. Another one is a bionic yarn that would be made from recyclables to help with the increase in clothing from retailers ending up in landfills. The yard would be biodegradable.

Admissions open

The Dubai College of Tourism (DCT) is also offering full scholarship to UAE expats and Emirati students who are interested in pursuing a career in tourism.
DCT has recently partnered with the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group, which are offering fully-funded scholarships for up to 20 students.
This scholarship opportunity is on offer for candidates applying for DCT's Certificate of Retail course and will cover the total tuition costs throughout the year.
"Dubai College of Tourism is committed to helping students develop their practical skills, industry talents and self-confidence by supporting and empowering young talent," said Essa Bin Hadher, general mnager of DCT.
The Abu Dhabi University (ADU) is offering its outstanding students, who meet the criteria for zakat, scholarships worth Dh50 million under their 'Our Youth Our Responsibility, Our Zakat Our Immunity' initiative, run in association with the Zakat Fund.
Meanwhile, in Sharjah, one family can win a Dh50,000 scholarship from a lucky draw at the City Centre Sharjah if they spend Dh200 at any store in the mall from August 15 to September 15.
"We know that rising education costs are always a matter of concern for parents, so this year we've decided to ease the burden for one lucky family by giving away an education scholarship. We also want to promote more family time that is fun, active and mentally stimulating for kids, so we've set up a unique game where two families can compete against each other to test their general knowledge and win prizes," said Yahya Mohamed, mall manager at City Centre Sharjah.
