The Dubai Police helped a pregnant African tourist after she fell prey to a scammer from their home country.
According to Emarat Al Youm, Brigadier General Ahmed Thani bin Ghalita, Director of the Al Raffa Police Station, reported that the tourist was in her last month of pregnancy when the scammer promised to obtain a visit visas to Germany for her and her compatriot.
The scammer fled after taking their passports, $6,000, and the woman’s marriage certificate, leaving them in dire circumstances.
Their situation was made even more difficult after the woman gave birth in a Dubai hospital, where she faced the prospect of being charged with having a baby outside of marriage if she could not produce her marriage certificate.
Necessary measures were taken immediately after the victim alerted the Al Raffa Police Station of their plight. Police were able to locate the scammer and have the man sign a pledge to return the two women’s money and documents.
Bin Ghalita explained that the centre gives great importance to its victim care department and that its constant monitoring of victim’s mental health helped ease the suffering of victims in distress. The department dealt with 9,360 victims last year alone.
The department won the Commander-in-Chief Award for Victim Care in 2019, for dealing with 11882 victims, and despite the pandemic, last year the department achieved 100% of the tasks assigned to it.
