A company sued for causing the death of a two-year-old child has been ordered to pay Dh200,000 in blood money.
The Abu Dhabi Court found the electric cable supplier guilty of causing a deadly electric shock which resulted in the child's death. The company was also ordered to pay Dh130,000 in material and moral damages to the aggrieved parents, as per Al Bayan report.
The parents had filed a Dh1 million lawsuit against the company, their insurance provider, and the operations and maintenance officer, for all material and psychological damages caused by the death of their son.
They argued, "The employee's mistake cost us our son's life. His negligence was in leaving the electrical room open for all passersby without properly securing the entrance."
Lawyers for the defence demanded the case be dismissed, arguing that "the ruling did not take into account the negligence of the child's parents who did not watch their son properly."
They argued the damages awarded by the lawsuit are illegal, as "The child's father will receive the amount of money ruled in their favor by the criminal court. They are not entitled to further compensation as lost caregiver, seeing their son is no more than two years old."
The court rejected their claims.
