A student, who was stunt driving and high on drugs when he assaulted a police lieutenant, was sentenced to three months in jail by a Dubai court.
The 23-year-old student, holder of a Comoros Islands passport, was high on drugs when he drove recklessly in Sharjah and had the police chase him to Dubai. He was found guilty by the Court of First Instance of assaulting a police officer and violently resisting arrest. He will be deported after completing his jail term.
The student's toxicology test proved he was high on drugs at the time of his arrest. He was also charged in a separate criminal case for taking drugs and was convicted.
The case was registered at Al Qusais police station on September 28, 2017.
"The Sharjah police operation room was alerted about a man driving recklessly in a way that put other cars and motorists on the roads in danger. After locating the car and tracing it into Dubai, we had obtained a warrant to arrest the driver there," the police lieutenant said.
"We learned then that the same driver was involved in a traffic accident and ran leaving his car behind. I chased him on foot and grabbed him as he tried to climb a house wall. But he resisted and pushed me causing me an injury. He was caught later."
The lieutenant told the prosecutor that he was on duty and in the uniform when the student resisted and assaulted him.
A hospital medical report showed the assault left the police officer with a right foot injury and a partial swelling in that foot.
The court ruling may be appealed.
