Twenty-seven kilograms of fake gold jewellery have been seized from shops in the capital.
The Abu Dhabi Police on Tuesday said they seized the counterfeit jewellery from 26 gold shops, with 11 of the outlets belonging to one person.
All the outlets were involved in the commercial fraud, according to police.
Cops said the bogus jewellery bore international trademarks and were being promoted in the market.
"We confiscated the gold jewellery from the shops during the inspection campaigns in the field," said Brigadier General, Dr Rashid Mohammed Boursheed, Director of CID at Abu Dhabi Police.
"Investigations revealed that some outlets were hiding the fake gold jewellery in secret places behind wooden shelves. The shops were promoting the fake items adorned with fake trademarks of reputable international brands."
The officer said that the force received information from an agent of a popular international brand complaining about the commercial fraud which affected their business.
A team tasked with investigating the matter raided the shops after confirming that the outlets dealt in fake gold jewellery.
Police said the owners of the outlets wanted to earn big amounts of profits illegally thinking that they could hide from authorities.
Police have referred the confiscated jewellery to the Public Prosecution for further investigations and charges.
Authorities have warned consumers about shops selling fake jewellery and advised them to verify the standards of the products to ensure that they match with the international brands before buying to avoid being cheated.
The public has been urged to report to authorities if they see or suspect any commercial fraud.
Abu Dhabi Police said they were keen on fighting such negative practices because they affect the commercial sector.
"If consumers want to ensure they are getting a genuine brand when it comes to purchasing jewellery, they should visit/speak to the brand direct and check what alternative agents and stockists are licensed to sell their brand. They need to ask questions to ensure they are buying from an authorised agency. Alternatively, buying direct from the brand will ensure that they are receiving a 100% genuine product," said Chandu Siroya, Vice-Chairman, Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group.
