A manager stood trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance for misusing another man's Emirates ID to fraudulently collect money at an exchange office.
According to public prosecution records, the 26-year-old Pakistani manager had had a plan with runaway accomplices to swindle a Russian woman by falsely claiming to her she won a Dh200,000 prize from a telecom company.
The case dates back to September 2, 2017, when the manager and his friends called the victim. During the phone call, they gained her trust after revealing her full name and workplace and pretending to her she was the lucky winner of a prize.
They made her believe them and follow their instructions of wiring them amounts of money. The defendant has been charged with misusing another man's ID and aiding and abetting in fraud.
The victim, a 28-year-old resident, said she received a text message that "she had won a Dh200,000 prize from her telecom provider".
"A man called me using a landline and pretended he worked for the phone services company. There were people around him, which made me believe they were staff and I was convinced of what he claimed."
She was told to wire those people Dh21,000 worth of "some fees''. "They told me to send them part of the money to a man - the original holder of the ID, whom the suspects impersonated - and the rest of the amount as mobile phone credit," the complainant told the prosecutor.
She realised later she had just fallen victim to a fraud. She filed a complaint at the police station of the Dubai International Airport.
The manager confessed that the fugitive accomplice sought his help in collecting money sent by the victims. The court will pronounce a verdict on October 23.
