A vendor has been charged at a Dubai court with attempted murder after he allegedly tried to kill a compatriot.
The 22-year-old Sudanese man denied the charge at the Court of First Instance.
He said he had no intention of taking the victim's life, claiming he got provoked after being insulted.
The incident allegedly took place on October 29, last year.
The 51-year-old complainant, a driver, said the defendant was his roommate. "He assaulted me at 1:15pm, following a verbal brawl, at our accommodation in Naif area. He stabbed me in the chest and back with a vegetable knife."
A police corporal said they received a report about a problem in Freej Al Murar area. "We moved to the flat in the first floor. The victim told us he entered the kitchen where the accused was cooking and holding a knife. They had an altercation following which the victim got stabbed twice in the chest and back."
He was rushed by ambulance to hospital.
During questioning at the police station, the defendant confessed he stabbed the victim with a knife, claiming he got provoked after he was insulted. But he said he did not try to kill the victim.
The stab wound the victim received in the chest was deep and critical and could have been fatal had not it been for the quick medical intervention, as per the forensic report.
The court will pronounce a ruling on May 15.
