A Palestinian businessman, who allegedly threatened to kill a Jordanian woman unless she dropped a complaint she had filed against him earlier with the Dubai Police, stood trial on Wednesday at a Dubai court.

The 37-year-old businessman allegedly threatened to slay the woman and he made the criminal threats in front of other men in Global Village.

The Court of First Instance heard the businessman did not stop at that but also assaulted her and punched her several times on the face and body, grabbing her by the neck and causing her to fall down.

The woman got a medical report showing that she was left with bruises and scratches on her face and arm.

The case dates back to December 21, 2017 and the present complaint was lodged at Al Barsha police station.

The 47-year-old complainant, who is an investor, said she was going to her shop in the Kuwaiti pavilion in the Global Village when she was suddenly assaulted by the accused. "I was having a talk with a man about the merchandise in the shop when I was surprised by the defendant entering from the backside of the shop and about to pounce on me.

"He took me by surprise, punching me in the face while saying that he would slay me. People, who happened to be around, took him away from me and called the police."

Even after the police arrived and arrested the defendant, he kept threatening her, she told the prosecutor.

She was taken to a nearby clinic and later to a hospital where she was given a medical report.

The woman said the defendant's assault left her with back and abdomen pain in addition to bruises and scratches all around her face and head. She also complained of contusions in her arm.

"The defendant's brother went to the police station and said he had nothing to do with his behaviour. He requested the police to help him stop his brother from calling him and pushing him to threaten me," she said.

The woman added that the defendant had told her at some point before the incident that she was arrogant and a witch and that she needed to repent to God or he would kill her in a violent way.
