A 23-year-old man, who allegedly raped a taxi passenger after posing as a police officer, faced charges in the Court of First Instance on Sunday.
Public prosecution records show that on March 31, 2014, in Al Qusais, the Jordanian man, halted the cab and its Moroccan passengers.
She was near her house when the suspect took her away just as she stepped off the cab. The man led the victim to his car where he raped her.
The accused denied the charge and claimed she paid her Dh1,000.
He told the investigators the woman ran away and he did not pay her.
The victim, a hairdresser, 24, said she was coming home by cab from a Bur Dubai at around 4am when a man standing near her place stopped the taxi and asked for her ID.
"He said he was from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and then told me to ride in his car as he smelled my breath and could tell that I had been consuming alcohol. He said it was not allowed here and he would take me into custody. He then drove to a dark location where he raped me."
A Moroccan waiter, 36, said he was with the victim inside cab that was about to drop her at her friend's flat. "A man suddenly came from the parking lot and told the driver to stop. We then stepped off as that man continued to stop taxis that were passing.
"He asked me about my residence and learned that I stayed in Dubai. He then told me to leave. He said the woman should go with him as she resided in Al Ain and had been drinking alcohol," the waiter said.
"When I refused to leave he threatened he would file a complaint against me and have a police patrol car take me into custody. I left and then tried to call her several times in vain."
A police lieutenant said : "The woman reported she was raped in April 2014. She said that shortly before reaching her place, a man, dressed in civilian clothes, stopped her cab and after posing as a police officer he managed to get her friends to leave. He then told her to ride in his car as he would take her to the police station which she obeyed out of fear.
He took her to an unpaved square behind some buildings and raped her. He threatened to get her jailed if she reported him to the police."
The lieutenant added that the woman later led the police to that location which turned out to be unlit.
The defendant's DNA traces were detected on a piece of cloth the complainant was wearing on the night of the incident, as shown in a report from the specialized criminal evidence department.
The trial will continue on January 30.
