A housemaid, who was reported to Al Barsha Police after she stole Dh500,000 worth of valuables from her Emirati sponsor's house, has been ordered jailed for one year by a Dubai court.
According to the public prosecution records, the 34-year-old Filipina maid stole 12 perfume bottles, laptop, designer bag, five rings, eight bracelets, two necklaces, earrings, cosmetics, three mobile phones and four watches, which are worth Dh500,000.
The Court of First Instance found her guilty of workplace theft and ordered her deportation after she completed her sentence.
The police were called to the family's house on January 31, this year.
The Emirati sponsor said her son told her the maid had stolen his wife's necklace. "They found the necklace in the maid's room. The police arrived and searched her room. The officers found items belongings to me and my daughters in her possession but they didn't arrest her at the time," the 59-year-old housewife said.
The complainant called the police again on February 10, and requested the maid be arrested because she no longer wanted her to stay at her house.
A 35-year-old Emirati female trader said the maid was working for them. "However, I did not give her two mobile phones."
The defendant admitted to the theft charge during the police questioning and the public prosecution investigation.
The court ruling has been appealed.
