A Russian woman and her male compatriot have been jailed for two years for robbing Dh330,000 from a flat at the Palm Jumeirah. According to the public prosecution records, the 47-year-old woman masterminded the robbery and incited her countryman, 30, to target the flat.
She committed the crime as one of the residents of the said flat was a "rival in the prostitution business".
The duo were convicted by the Court of First Instance of robbery with the use of sharp weapons, and trespass charges. The court ordered their deportation after completing their jail terms.
The incident took place on May 29, 2017.
A police lieutenant, who went to the crime scene, said the flat was shared by six Russians, including three women. "The complainants said that when they opened the door, three men carrying sharp weapons barged inside."
They told the investigators they were forced down as the robbers stole large amounts of cash and mobile phones from them.
After receiving the complaint, the police learned the Russian female defendant was involved in the robbery. After she was arrested, she claimed the robbery was payback against one of the flat's occupants. Her accomplice was arrested shortly later.
The ruling remains subject to appeal.
