The serious and alarming crime index dropped by 15.9 per cent in the third quarter of the current year as compared to the same period in 2016.
This was disclosed by Major General Khalil Al Mansouri, assistant commander in chief of the Dubai Police.
He said that the decline continued during the last quarter of the year as well, revealing that the percentage of anonymous reports of crimes such as murder and rape reached zero.
The drop in the crimes can be attributed to a strict and accurate evaluation mechanism and the electronic criminal record system that monitors the criminal reports by the police stations, and reviews the resolved cases. He stressed resolving crimes is important as it leads to arrest of gangs and acts as a deterrence.
Al Mansouri said that disturbing crimes, such as murders, dropped by 27 per cent since the beginning of 2017 to the third quarter, as compared to the same period last year. All murder cases recorded in 2017 were cracked, he pointed out.
He added that the crimes involving assault also came down by 34.8 per cent since 2017 start till the third quarter as compared to the corresponding period in 2016.
He pointed out that there has been a 35 per cent decrease in cases of burglary since the beginning of this year till September, as compared to the same period last year. This was because of the expansion of crime preventive programmes, including housing security and deploying of patrols in almost all jurisdictions of police stations.
He revealed that there was a drop in vehicle theft cases by 13.6 per cent from January till September this year, as compared to 2016.
