Dubai expat arrested for abusing, assaulting policeman

The expat denied the charges saying he did not touch the police officer

A Dubai expatriate is standing trial at the Court of First Instance on the charge of physically assaulting a police officer and verbally abusing him.
The 24-year-old Jordanian man, who works as an accountant, resisted the on-duty police corporal on February 8 in the Naif area. He is accused of insulting the officer by telling him that he had mental issues and needed to get help. He pleaded not guilty to the charges in court, claiming he did not touch the officer.
"I don't know how he could possibly get a medical report that says he got injured. I did not assault him," the accountant said in court.
The public prosecution referred the accused to court and recommended that the strictest penalty be imposed on him.
"I was on duty with my colleague at the Naif metro station when we spotted the accused. He looked suspicious to us. He produced his ID upon our request but would not accompany us to the police office at the station. He claimed he was in a hurry and told us to keep his ID," the corporal who was assaulted said.
"As he kept walking, I followed him and told him to go with us, but he refused. I grabbed his hand to stop him from running away. At that moment, the accused said I had a mental problem and should get help."
The defendant also allegedly asked the officer how he was appointed and verbally abused him further.
When they reached the office, the complainant touched the defendant's back, telling him to go inside. "But the defendant then raised his voice, telling me not to touch him. He then slapped me on the chest and grabbed me by the neck. A fellow policeman had to stop the accused twice from physically assaulting me," the corporal told the prosecutor.
The accountant was restrained and handcuffed.
A police patrol was called and the defendant was taken to the Naif police station. The corporal told the prosecutor he was left with minor chest bruises.
The court is set to pronounce a verdict on December 31.
