Drunk man jailed for attacking Dubai cops

Dubai - He denied the charges of assaulting an on-duty police officer and drinking alcohol without a licence.

A Pakistani man, who assaulted a police officer in an inebriated condition, has been jailed for three months by a Dubai court.
The public prosecution records show the 36-year-old man, who is a real estate agent, had consumed alcohol before he resisted and assaulted the cop.
He denied the charges of assaulting an on-duty police officer and drinking alcohol without a licence at the Court of First Instance. But he was found guilty and will be deported after serving his jail sentence and paying a Dh1,000 fine.
The case was registered at Al Rashidiya police station.
The police officer, who was assaulted by the defendant, said they were alerted by the Dubai Police operation room about a problem at the Russian cluster in the International City on April 10. "I went with a colleague to where the report came from and spoke to an Asian man who claimed the defendant assaulted and insulted him.
The red marks on his face and neck and his torn shirt suggested he was assaulted indeed."
The police officers located the defendant shortly later. "As I was about to handcuff him, he punched me on the chest and pushed me several times, causing me to fall down and hit my leg. My colleague and I then brought him under control and cuffed him."
The other police officer said they heard from the man, who had called the police, that the accused had been harassing his sister. "He would knock on her door and then go away. The defendant assaulted that man and insulted him as he confronted him. We went to the defendant's flat and he walked out to us looking in bad shape. He would not let my colleague handcuff him and rather made him fall down after he pushed him repeatedly. We then took him cuffed into custody."
A forensic report showed the left leg bruises the officer was left with because of the defendant's assault.
