Stable family life is vital to keep children away from drugs and bad company, opined a top official from the Dubai Police.

Amal Al Faqa'i, head of the social communication of the Dubai Police anti-narcotics department, made the statement after two men were caught using drugs following the divorce of their parents.

"A sound marital life will bring psychological stability to all family members, especially children who need care and follow-up from parents. If there is a break in the family through divorce children might fell into the clutches of bad company and abuse."

In this case, the duo's mother divorced the father after he expressed his desire to marry another woman, said Al Faqa'i. "She took the children's custody and kept them under the care of their grandmother. Meanwhile, the father married three times and had other children and was not keen to keep up with the well-being of the duo."

"Due to age and deterioration of health, the grandmother was not well aware of the kids' bad company. They began with bad friends and learned the use of various drugs until they became addicted. The boys had also left their studies. The elder one was arrested and jailed and the younger teenager is currently under periodic examination conducted by the police," she added.

Al Faqa'i stressed that children neglected by their parents will not grow well psychologically and socially. "The rate of drug abuse among the age group 21-25 is 38.35 per cent, followed by 26-30 age group which represent 22.26 per cent, 15-20 years by 18.45 per cent, 31-35 age group by 13.60 percent," she concluded.
