A bootlegger was charged at a Dubai court after he assaulted two on-duty police officers.
The Court of First Instance heard the man, who is a 30-year-old security guard from Nigeria, was caught by the officers in possession of a total of 68 liquor bottles and cans which he was selling in public, with other accomplices, on December 19 last year, in Naif area.
He was charged with physically assaulting the police officers and possession of liquor for bootlegging.
A policeman said he was on patrol duty with a colleague in Freej Al Murar around 7pm on December 19 last year, when he spotted three African men selling alcohol to people on the street. "We watched them for two to three days in the same area. When we raided them and were arresting them, two fled while the third fiercely resisted us. As we showed him our police cards, he pushed me against a wall. The man was so aggressive that he also caused my colleague to fall down."
The officer added that they brought the man under control, handcuffed him and took him into custody.
Corroborating his statement, the other officer added that 31 liquor bottles, 37 beer cans and Dh255 were seized from the place.
The first officer had to undergo medical treatment for his injured wrist for some time, as shown in several forensic examination reports.
The other cop was left with bruises on the left wrist, according to another forensic report.
The guard will be sentenced on July 10.
