14 murder convicts seek pardon as UAE expat agrees to pay blood money

Sharjah - The court hearing was postponed to complete the negotiations with the victims' family to pardon the 12 Indians.

Fourteen Indians on death row for killing two Indian nationals following a clash over bootlegging are seeking pardon from the victim's kin.
The victims are 23-year-old Kasif Ali and 25-year-old Varinder Pal Singh. Out of the 12 Indian defendants, 11 are from Punjab and one from Haryana. They were present during their hearing in Sharjah Criminal Court. Two defendants - who work as taxi drivers - were released on bail.
During the court hearing presided by judge Mahmood Abu Baker, Indian expat Dr SP Singh Oberoi, who came along with one of the victims' kin Nirmal Singh, told the court that both the affected families are ready for a compromise. Oberoi told the court that he will get the agreement papers ready and pay the blood money.

The accused were arrested by the Sharjah Police after a clash triggered between two groups in front of a labour accommodation in Al Saja industrial area at 11pm on January 1, 2016. The groups used knives and assaulted each other, causing death of two. The police launched investigation and referred 14 accused to the Sharjah public prosecution and charged them with murder. During the police and court hearing, the accused admitted that they were involved in bootlegging to make fast bucks.
