An Abu Dhabi resident has been found guilty of defamation and invasion of privacy after she shared a copy of a court ruling on Instagram, with a man’s name on the document. The court ordered that she pay the man Dh20,000 in damages.

The man filed the lawsuit after he saw the woman’s Instagram post, which clearly showed his name as the person convicted in a court case, according to records from the Abu Dhabi Civil First Instance Court.

The plaintiff said the woman had posted the court ruling on social media to damage his reputation. She also failed to obtain the man’s permission prior to sharing, records show. The complainant initially demanded Dh200,000 in compensation.

The woman had admitted to posting the court ruling on social media but claimed that it was a mistake and didn’t intend to harm the man.
