K. Padmarajan, a 65-year-old tyre repair shop owner, began fighting elections in 1988 from Tamil Nadu state
The Court of First Instance heard that a 38-year-old European woman, a manager, and her friend, a 34-year-old Arab employee, treated the on-duty police officer with contempt.
The woman allegedly yelled at and spat on the cop, while the man insulted him. The man also threatened to get the policeman sacked as he knew "VVIPs".
The case was registered at Al Barsha police station. Both the defendants have been detained.
A police sergeant said he was on patrol duty around 3.30am on June 12 when he received a report about a public disturbance in Palm Jumeirah. "The watchman told me the disturbance was happening at an apartment on the fourth floor. The female accused opened the door for us and she verbally abused me. She spat on my face and was about to shut the door after I told her to calm down."
The other accused then came out asking about a public prosecution warrant. "He then said he would get me sacked from the job and that he worked for VVIPs."
The sergeant told the investigator that both the defendants were drunk at the time. The sergeant's colleague who was with him on patrol duty corroborated his statement during the public prosecution investigation.
The watchman, a Filipino, said he called the police over loud music and noise at the defendants' flat. "I had asked them repeatedly to reduce the music volume but to no avail. When the police officers knocked on the door, the woman started yelling."
The male accused has a criminal record.
The trial has been adjourned to September 22.
