A 36-year-old Asian woman was arrested by the Sharjah Police for stealing an Arab woman's handbag at a mall. The contents of the handbag were worth over Dh30,000.
The police received a complaint at Al Buheirah Corniche police station and criminal investigation officers conducted an investigation. Officers found that the bag was stolen from the woman from her baby's stroller while she was engaging with children at the play area of a mall. The suspect was identified and the bag was restored to its owner along with its contents.
Colonel Yusuf bin Harmoul, deputy director of the comprehensive police centres department and the head of the crime-methods analysis team, said that bag snatchers often target women, exploiting carelessness such as leaving the bag in a shopping cart or stroller while shopping or being preoccupied with children.
"The Sharjah Police have launched several awareness campaigns in this regard, including 'Beware to be secure' campaign, which aims to preserve property from thefts," he added.
He urged the public to be vigilant and not to leave their belongings, such as hand luggage or envelopes containing money, in situations that facilitate thefts - shopping in crowded places or leaving them in vehicles.
