A 42-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman, both expats, have each been sentenced to six months in jail by a Dubai court for assaulting two on-duty police officers.
According to public prosecution records, the British man and the Vietnamese woman were drunk when they behaved aggressively with two Dubai cops while resisting arrest.
The man also threatened the officers "of what he was capable of doing because he is British".
The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the two defendants of charges of assaulting and threatening police officers and consuming alcohol without a permit.
It ordered their deportation after they completed their jail terms.
They denied the charges earlier in court.
The case dates back to March 22. A police officer said he was on patrol duty with a colleague around 3.30am when they received a report about two drunk persons behaving erratically on a street in Al Rafaa.
The officer told the prosecutor that he and his colleague went to the scene. The man on trial would not pay heed to his instructions of going back home by a cab. "He started yelling at me, threatening me that he is British and that I didn't know what he could do to me."
The man would not let the officers handcuff him but rather fiercely resisted arrest by pushing and kicking the officers. His female companion also hit one of the officers with her purse.
Both were later taken into custody.
They may appeal the ruling within 15 days.
