A 59-year-old man, who was caught at a Dubai airport with more than 1.5kg of heroin in his possession, has been sentenced to 10 years in jail by a court here. The Court of First Instance convicted the Pakistani man of a charge of smuggling drugs for peddling. It fined him Dh50,000 and also ordered his deportation at the end of his jail term.

The man was arrested on August 11 at the Dubai International Airport when the customs inspectors found a quantity of drugs stashed in his baggage.

A report from the general directorate of criminal evidence and criminology showed that the quantity seized from the accused was heroin and weighed more than 1.5kg.

The court ordered that the drugs be confiscated.

The verdict has been appealed by both the defendant and the public prosecution.
