With residents and citizens flying out of UAE for summer vacations, the Dubai Public Prosecution has issued an advisory for residents - by quoting a robbery case.
Posted on social media, the statement recounts a case where a resident had left his house door unlocked - and hence becoming an easy target for robbers:

'Summer has come and travel time was finally approaching. Abu Moaz has planned a month-long trip to one of the beautiful countries with charming nature. His children were used to take long trips and visit several cities during their summer vacation. Abu Moaz has a small family consisting of wife and 3 children. He lives with his family in a luxurious villa in a prestigious neighborhood.
The family was ready to travel and it prepared the suitcase one after another for the expected day. The family left for the airport, but Abu Moaz left the front door of the villa open, thinking that he has closed it by the remote control. The door remained in the same condition for several days, until a gang passed by that home which was left empty for several days, without anyone entering or coming out of it.

What happened?

The gang, which was specialized in stealing large houses left without inhabitants, planned to enter the place that seemed empty of its inhabitants, as this period is known for the families to travel out of the country during the summer vacation. Thus, the gang members were sure that the loot will be greater in quantity and quality. They looted a lot from that big home in that lavish neighborhood, which is inhabited only by those who seem to have material comfort.. They got watches and jewelries worth a total of 500 thousand dirhams.

They had frequented to it several days and made sure that its inhabitants had travelled. They broke into the home, carrying metal tools such as a screwdriver and crowbar which they brought for this purpose. They used it to break the lock of the back door and managed to enter it and then used the same tools to break the iron cabinets that contain the stolen goods and they were able to steal and escape with it. #dubai #dxbpp #crimeandlesson

After returning from travel and reporting the case of theft and arrest of the perpetrators of the crime, Public Prosecution charged them with (felonies of robbery at night from a place of residence with weapon, offence of damaging by a gang of three persons, possessing proceeds of crime, misdemeanor offence of trespassing) in accordance with the Federal Penal Code and its amendments.

Lesson

Public Prosecution underscores that all those wishing to travel must keep their valuables and their money in safe places such as deposit boxes in banks or with those they consider trustworthy from their relatives, as well as ensure the presence of worker, if any, to guard the house during the period of travel, as the empty homes are the focus of attention of criminals and it seduces them to steal and seize its valuables.'

Free security services

In Dubai, besides summer safety awareness, the Dubai Police offer free home security service to residents who would be leaving for vacations.
Cops on horses or in patrol cars pull up in front of vacationers' houses and watch over the residences of those who have signed up for the home security service.
Residents can register for the service at the Dubai Police website; via the app; or by filling out a form at the nearest police station. According to the Dubai Police, registration for the home security service programme has increased since its launch in 2001.
This summer, steel grills have suddenly become a common sight in some gated communities in Dubai. More households have also reportedly opted to install CCTV cameras in their homes. The reason? An alleged spate of theft and burglary incidents.
