A saleswoman is standing trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance on the charge of stealing Dh50,000 in cash from the jewellery shop where she worked.
According to public prosecution records, the 30-year-old Sri Lankan former employee stole the amount on August 25. Her employer filed a complaint at the Bur Dubai Police Station.
The complainant, a 57-year-old Iranian investor, said during prosecution investigation that he discovered that an amount of Dh50,000 was missing on August 25. "I was counting the money I usually keep in the safe when I found that there is a Dh50,000 deficit."
He told the investigator that the defendant was captured on the shop's surveillance camera opening the safe and taking the money which she then hid in her clothes. She left the place with the stolen cash.
He said that the employee was on the job when she misappropriated the cash.
When he confronted her with the footage, she confessed she stole the amount and returned Dh16,000.
A video clip showing the saleswoman hiding the money in her clothes while no one was around in the shop was used as prosecution evidence.
She is detained and will be sentenced on December 9.
