A retired police officer stood trial in a Sharjah court for allegedly chasing a driver, insulting him and threatening to jail and deport him. The ex-cop - a GCC national in his sixties - denied all the charges against him and pleaded not guilty in the Sharjah Criminal Court.
He told the court that the motorist - an Arab man - was driving his car at frantic speed and so he stopped him while only asking for his identity card.
The driver alleged that the defendant chased him for over an hour while he was moving on Airport Road. The accused forced him to stop his car on the side of the road, stepped off his vehicle, flaunted his military card and asked him to show his ID card as well as vehicle registration papers to charge him with a traffic violation, the complainant claimed.
The motorist refused to show the documents and this apparently infuriated the retired policeman, who spoke harshly with him, the complainant pointed out, adding that the man not just insulted him but also threatened to jail and deport him. He said he left the scene without any argument, after noting down the car's number plate and headed straight to a Sharjah police station to file a complaint against the defendant.
The complainant said the accused pulled him over even though there was no traffic congestion on the road, while contending he was driving at a speed not exceeding 100km/per hour.
The court adjourned the case to March 10 to consider possibility of reconciliation between the two parties.
