A policeman has been charged at the Dubai Court of First Instance after he allegedly tortured a drug addict suspect.
Prosecutors accused the 24-year-old officer of using force to extract a confession from the suspect and make him cooperate. The incident dates back to April 12, last year.
The alleged victim, a 25-year-old Iraqi student, told the investigators that he was assaulted upon his arrest by the officers.
He said the defendant wanted him to give information about his possession of other banned substance (other than the quantity seized from his place). He claimed he sustained injuries.
The student's mother said their house was raided at 3pm. "My son was in the bathroom and I heard him screaming as he was assaulted. The police searched our house."
She said that her son was then escorted down and the officers came back twice looking for drugs. She told the investigators that she witnessed her son being assaulted in the living room, while he was handcuffed, by one of the officers and that his face got a swelling.
She claimed that she spotted injury marks on her son's hand, left wrist and chest. The trial will continue on February 6.
