A motorist, who was high on drugs, led the police on a high-speed chase from Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah, a court has heard. According to public prosecution records, the 28-year-old Emirati defendant had a three-month-old baby and two women with him in the car on August 15 last year when he tried to ram his vehicle into police patrols in Ras Al Khaimah.

The defendant has faced multiple charges, including driving under the influence of drugs, reckless driving and putting others' lives at risk, as he stood trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance. He was also charged with possessing drugs, resisting on-duty police officers and damaging a public property.

An anti-narcotics police officer told the prosecution investigator that they received a tip-off about the defendant. "We went to his house in Al Muraqqabat shortly before 9am as we had information that he possessed and took drugs."

However, the accused, who was then in his car, sped off instead of complying with the instructions of the police team that had an arrest and search warrant against him.

"He was driving dangerously and recklessly. He jumped a red light and would not heed to our orders for him to pull over. We alerted the police in other emirates about him," the officer said during the investigation. He added that the accused kept driving fast all the way to Sharjah and Ajman until he reached Ras Al Khaimah. "He threw things on the police cars and even tried to crash his car into them. After he was made to stop, he kept resisting arrest."

The accused, who was apparently under the influence of drugs, was referred to the narcotics department. The police recovered heroin and crystal meth from him. His urine sample tested positive for two types of narcotics, as per a report from the general directorate of criminal evidence and criminology.

The trial has been adjourned to April 3.
