A new remand facility was recently inaugurated at Al Barsha Police Station in Bur Dubai area, the Dubai Police have announced.
Maj-Gen Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police, opened the new building in the presence of Saeed Mohammed Hareb, secretary-general of the Dubai Sports Council (DSC); Maj-Gen Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansoori, assistant Commander-in-Chief for Criminal Investigation Affairs; Maj-General Abdullah Ali Al-Ghaithi, director-general of the Department of Protective Security and Emergency; and a number of police station directors, senior officers and officials.
"Dubai Police is keen to implement the best global standards in security work in all aspects, including remand facilities, which support the efforts of police stations towards the procedures for transferring detainees across police stations and other entities," Maj-Gen Al Marri said.
A remand facility is where people charged with an offence are held while awaiting their trial.
There's a sports centre, too
The commander-in-chief also lauded the efforts of the DSC, especially their cooperation in planning, constructing and managing all sports facilities at the newly inaugurated building.
A joint venture between the Dubai Police and the DSC, a sports centre was also inaugurated inside the detention centre of Al Barsha Police Station.
The centre spans a wide area, equipped with tools for strength training, treadmills, a jogging track, as well as zones for basketball, football and other sports.
Hareb said: "Dubai Sports Council has a strong relationship with Dubai Police and we are working together on a number of joint initiatives to promote sports and a physically active lifestyle among all sections of our community.
"We want to give all segments of our community, including those in detention centres and correctional facilities, an opportunity to play sports and exercise because sports has a positive influence and it shall support the rehabilitation process of these people."
