A waiter has been charged with stealing Dh3,500 from the restaurant where he worked
The Court of First Instance heard how the 25-year-old Nepalese waiter disconnected the power to the surveillance cameras at the restaurant after stealing the revenues from a bag and the cash box, hoping the recording won't be found.
The incident happened on December 5 last year and was reported at Al Qusais police station.
A 33-year-old Indian cashier said that at 11am on the day, he could not find the briefcase in which he usually kept the revenues of the shop. "I rang up my colleague to ask him whether he had seen it. I was surprised as he was also looking for the key of the cash register."
The cashier then checked the camera recordings which had captured the waiter holding the money briefcase. "It was around 6.30am. I saw him heading towards the cash register which he opened with the key and took the money that was inside the register and in the briefcase. He took a total amount of Dh3,500.
"The waiter had disconnected the power off the surveillance cameras," the witness added.
He told the prosecutor that the waiter returned on December 8 to their accommodation where he admitted to stealing the money. "He asked for settlement with the business owner. He said he was willing to pay back what he stole."
