An Asian man was stabbed to death during a fight over bootlegging business in Sharjah industrial area 5.
When alerted of the incident, an emergency team arrived on site to find the victim in a pool of blood. He was taken to Al Kuwaiti Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Eyewitnesses told the Sharjah Police that the victim was stabbed following arguments with his compatriots. One of them took a knife and stabbed him multiple times and then fled the scene.
The police arrested all the men involved in the brawl and also found the tool used in the crime.
"Several cases of illegal alcohol trading in workers' accommodations have been reported at various police stations. The bootleggers often form groups and clash among themselves, jeopardising public safety," said a Sharjah Police official.
"Bootlegging businesses were declining in the last three years, but this year there has been an increase. We have intensified crackdown targeting bootleggers with a focus in workers' accommodations in industrial areas by locating the storage areas as well as distribution points," he added.
He urged the public to help the police put an end to the illegal practice by reporting such activities on 999, or 06-5632222, or via email at najeed@shjpolice.gov.ae. The Sharjah Municipality also called for similar public cooperation to deal with such menaces by contacting the call centre on 993.
