An expat in Dubai slit his girlfriend's throat and then turned himself in at the police station, the Court of First Instance has heard.

Dubai public prosecution records show that following the incident that took place in July last year, the defendant, a 27-year-old Indian, drove to the Al Muraqqabat police station and gave himself in to officers while the victim's body was in his car parked outside.

The defendant admitted during the prosecution investigation that he stabbed the victim, of his nationality, several times including in the chest and slit her throat after -- as he alleged -- finding out she had been talking to other men. He claimed he was so in love with her for a long time but she did not want to marry him.

On the day of the incident, she rode in his car and they had a quarrel, during which she provoked him, he alleged, when he expressed willingness to meet her parents and propose to her.

He slit her throat and drove for about 45 minutes with her body lying next to him. He got himself some food and water at a restaurant and drank the water in the car before turning himself in at the Al Muraqqabat police station.

The accused, who is facing a premeditated murder charge, remains in detention while prosecutors are pushing for the capital punishment against him.

A police lieutenant said that he was on the job when the accused walked into his office telling him he killed his girlfriend. "He looked confused and tense. His left hand was covered with a blood-covered piece of cloth. His clothes were untidy."

The officer told a colleague to arrest the accused and then went outside to check the defendant's car. "I used gloves to open the car. Its engine was still running. The body was there lying on the front seat which was completely bent backwards. She looked stabbed and had also neck injury marks. A big knife was left on the back seat. I called the forensic experts."

The officer quoted the defendant as confessing that he killed the woman after arguing with her for over two hours and failing to sort out the future of their relation. The police seized blood-stained print-outs of e-mails the accused had sent to the victim's parents revealing to them his intention.

The defendant also confessed during interrogation that he had bought a knife prior to calling the victim and asking her out.

CCTV footage showed the victim stepping inside the defendant's car after 9.30pm in a car park in a Bur Dubai area.

The trial will continue on March 24.
