A motorist was arrested for driving recklessly in the wrong direction without a number plate and hitting a police patrol on Jabel Ali-Lehbab Road in Dubai.
Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, director of Dubai Traffic Police, said the police patrol was on its regular duty when they spotted the SUV being driven dangerously. "The driver refused to comply with the instructions of the cops, and ignored the police siren and loudspeaker. He took a wrong turn and started driving in the wrong direction towards Dubai-Al Ain Road."
Al Mazrouei pointed out that the motorist deliberately hit the police patrol before he headed towards Sharjah-bound Emirates Road. "As he continued driving recklessly, the driver lost control and veered off the road with a tyre burst before the vehicle came to a complete stop," Al Mazrouei added.
He said the police patrol nabbed the driver and the two occupants in the car.
The director warned that serious action would be taken against reckless motorists. He noted that Article 21 of the UAE Federal Law of 1995 concerning road traffic states that driving a vehicle without a number plate in a way that endangers people's lives and causes damage to their property is punishable by imprisonment for a period of no less than a month and not exceeding three years, including a hefty fine. The driver's licence can also be suspended for two years.
If the driver doesn't have a valid licence, judicial authorities will be asked to deprive the driver of the right to obtain a new driving licence for not less than four years in addition to confiscating the vehicle.
Al Mazrouei urged the public to report reckless drivers via the Police Eye service available on the Dubai Police smart app.
