A 31-year-old expat beat a compatriot to death for sleeping at his spot in a yard, the Dubai Court of First Instance has heard.
Public prosecution records show that the Indian man repeatedly punched and kicked the man all over his body, causing him injuries that led to his death. He was drunk at the time.
A policeman said that on August 18, they were alerted about a body dumped in a yard behind a mall in Al Quoz industrial area.
"We went to the scene and spoke to a security guard. He said he found the body in the morning near a car."
The police then tracked down the defendant after investigations established his involvement in the crime.
He was arrested and taken to the Criminal Investigation Department.
During interrogation, the accused told the police that he did assault the victim with his bare hands. There were no surveillance cameras and no one witnessed the incident that happened late at night.
"On the night of the incident, he was sleeping in the yard, then he woke up to see the victim sleeping next to him. He had earlier warned him not to take his spot there," the policeman told the investigator.
The accused expat admitted to the CID officers that he punched and kicked the victim. He then went to sleep in a pick-up truck.
When he woke up the next morning, he found workers crowding around the victim who was motionless. He knew then that he was dead, so he fled the scene.
The accused told the police that although he assaulted the victim because he took his sleeping spot, he did not mean to kill him.
Several bruises were found on the victim's face, abdomen and chest and there were also rib fractures, the forensic report showed. These factors contributed to heart failure and blood circulation problems that led to his death.
The report added that the victim was under the influence of alcohol when he died.
The defendant will be sentenced on November 28.
