A housemaid stood trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance, accused of stealing jewellery and cash worth Dh182,000 from her Emirati sponsor. The 36-year-old Filipina maid allegedly stole Dh82,000 in cash from the 63-year-old sponsor.
The case was reported in September this year at the Lahbab police station. The maid is detained.
The complainant, a housewife, said she started monitoring two maids who worked at her house after noticing amounts missing.
“I kept Dh4,000, which I marked, in my purse in the closet. When I lost it, I confronted the maids in front of my daughter. At first, they denied having to do anything with it. However, after about half an hour, one of them — the defendant — admitted she had taken the money. She brought me Dh8,000 and confessed she had been stealing my money. She said that she stole Dh82,000 in total.”
When the employer checked her closet, she found that her jewellery was missing. “I could not find two gold necklaces, four gold bracelets and two other pieces. It was worth Dh100,000.”
The maid reportedly admitted to her sponsor that she had stolen the jewellery and shipped it to her home country.
During the police interrogation and the public prosecution investigation, the housemaid allegedly said she would steal between Dh500 and Dh1,000 when her employer would go out.
“She would go to her sponsor’s bedroom and steal on a daily basis when her employer was away. Sometimes it would happen more than once a day. She stole about Dh82,000, in cash, and sent amounts to her country,” investigators said.
Money transfer receipts were found with the defendant.
A ruling will be pronounced on November 9.
