A 31-year-old wanted man, who sped off with his friends in a car while engaging police officers in a chase for over two hours, faced trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance.
The Emirati man was believed to be high on drugs when he and other 'drug addicts' ran from police patrol cars in a long chase.
He was charged with physically assaulting two on-duty police officers.
The case dates back to December 13 last year in Al Barsha.
A police corporal said he was on patrol duty when they were notified about wanted suspects travelling in a 4WD car. "We learned they ran away from Al Qusais police officers. We spotted the suspects' car in Al Barsha but the driver did not heed our order to pull over. He led us on a chase for nearly one hour. The car's driver then pulled over and three persons were seen fleeing the scene."
The corporal told the prosecutor that the same wanted suspects were spotted about half an hour later in another vehicle. "Several patrol cars chased them for some time to near a villa where the vehicle was parked. One of the wanted men ran away. The two others looked as if they were under the influence of drugs. One of them would not want to be handcuffed and tried to escape."
The defendant on trial was the one sitting next to the driver. "Tramadol pills and an injection were found in the vehicle in addition to other tools used by drug addicts," the corporal recalled.
The car was seized for examination by forensic experts. The suspects were sent for toxicology tests and the driver referred to the Traffic Prosecution.
The defendant remains in detention and will be sentenced on June 27.
