The Ajman Police have arrested 12 members of a 14-member gang for allegedly stealing 83 cars worth Dh6.35 million from rent-a-car companies in the UAE.

According to a top officer of the police, the gang of Arab and Pakistan nationalities rented the cars from the firms and then shipped them out to another Arab country.

Addressing a virtual Press conference on Tuesday, Major-General Sheikh Abdullah Al Nuaimi, Commander-in-Chief of Ajman Police, said that the police operation titled ‘The container of the Darkness’ was conducted in cooperation with the police of the other Arab country. The police have managed to restore 55 of the stolen vehicles and are trying to trace the rest, he said.

“The gang was divided into two groups with each having separate roles in the crime. Members of the first group, who entered the UAE on visit visas, rented vehicles from the firms and then handed over to the second group. The second group shipped the vehicles outside the country.

The gangs shipped 28 vehicles to an Arab country in containers and presented documents to the port authorities, stating that it was home appliances inside the containers.

Lt-Col Ahmed Saeed Al Nuaimi, director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), said that they received six complaints from car rental offices operating in Ajman and other emirates.

The police immediately formed a team to investigate the matter. The team managed to identify 12 suspects who were arrested from various emirates, while two fled the country.

The suspects confessed to their crimes and told the police that they had 17 vehicles on their possession inside the UAE and they were on the process of shipping them out. "The suspects said they had already sent 38 vehicles to another country, using documents that indicated the containers carried home appliances. Usually such containers are not subjected to inspection.”

The police contacted Ajman port authorities and informed them of the containers. “With the help of the port authorities, we managed to seize the 17 vehicles before shipping. We contacted the Arab country and informed them about the containers that reached their port with false documents. With their cooperation, we could restore 38 more vehicles," said Lt-Col Al Nuaimi.

He added that the police are coordinating with Interpol to apprehend the other two suspects, who are suspected to be the masterminds of the entire operation. “We are also trying to locate 28 more vehicles which are already in the other country,” he said.
