Five men were charged at the Dubai Court of First Instance on Sunday for allegedly assaulting and forcibly robbing a compatriot of of Dh 1,850,000.
According to Dubai public prosecution records, the incident took place on August 5 in Al Muraqqabat when five Sudanese men stole a money briefcase, mobile phone and two books from the victim.
The victim, a 43-year-old Sudanese man, recounted during prosecution investigation that he had just walked out of his workplace and heading home on August 5.
"I was carrying a briefcase, in which I kept the money, my mobile phone and two books. I was surprised by a man who punched me in the back."
The victim turned around and he was confronted by three men; "One of them pepper-sprayed me. They snatched the briefcase from my hand and fled the scene. I tried in vain to chase them."
A police lieutenant told the prosecutor: "We learned from the complainant that the robbery happened in Al Baraha. Our investigation led us to the defendants' involvement. They confessed to the crime. We found Dh1,750,640 in one of the men's places."
The police also found items with their receipts which were purchased with the stolen cash.
The victim got a medical report of the injuries caused by the assault.
The five men, all detained, will be sentenced on October 20.
