A 67-year-old investor was charged at the Dubai Court of First Instance with blackmail and making criminal threats against his 29-year-old daughter.
Prosecutors accused the Jordanian man of threatening to kill, jail and deport his daughter as well as deprive her of pocket money. His threats were to blackmail her into giving false testimony against her sister in another case, in which he was the accused.
His threats allegedly started from January. A complaint was lodged at Al Rafaa Police Station.
The daughter, a 29-year-old student, said that since January she was subjected to threats of death, jail, deportation and deprivation of money by her father.
"He was pushing me into perjury against my sister, who was suing him in another case."
She told the investigators that her father threatened her and her two sisters by saying "you will pay dearly for every day your brother spends behind bars, and you will end up in jail".
She claimed the last time her father threatened her was in June.
Her 16-year-old sister corroborated her story. "I heard him repeatedly saying that he was not happy with my sister (the 29-year-old) and he wanted her to change her testimony in court in the case filed by our sister, 26.
"He kept saying that he lost Dh3 million in the other case and would make us pay for it. He said he would get us all deported and make us starve to death," the witness, 16, said during the public prosecution investigation.
The investor was accused at the Court of Misdemeanors of failing to report his wife, son and two daughters to the police for torturing and illegally confining his 26-year-old daughter.

The 50-year-old Jordanian housewife, along with her son, 20, and two daughters, aged 23 and 31, were found guilty on Tuesday by the Dubai Court of First Instance of the charges of torturing, illegally confining her other daughter and beating her up for a long time.
They were each sentenced to six months in jail to be followed by deportation. They were convicted in May and found guilty again in a re-trial.
The trial of the father (on the charge of making threats) has been adjourned to December 9.
The court suspended the execution of their jail terms. They will all be deported as per the court order.
