A 73-year-old man and his son, 21, stood trial on Sunday at a Dubai court for assaulting two on-duty police officers. The two Emirati men refused to let the officers impound their car and had a physical confrontation with them. They allegedly pushed the policemen, causing one to fall.
They were charged at the Court of First Instance with assaulting on-duty police officers and making threats. Prosecutors sought a stiff penalty for the accused.
The case dates back to June 4 in Al Barsha.
A police lieutenant said he was on patrolling duty with a colleague at 11.45pm on June 4 when they spotted a car without number plates. Its windows were tinted beyond the legal limit. "We stopped the car, which was being driven by the son.
We informed him that we would issue a ticket as his car had no front or rear registration plates and impound it."
His father then came to the spot and talked to the lieutenant. "He threatened me, saying he would not let me impound the car. He told his son to drive the car back home.
"His son then threatened to run over us if we did not get out of his way. They both then left the scene," the lieutenant recounted during the public prosecution investigation.
The two officers intercepted the car. "When we tried to stop it, we found that the son's friend was driving it. As he got out, the two accused came. The son then tried to get behind the wheel to drive away. As we tried to handcuff him, his father grabbed my hands and pushed me several times, causing me to fall down," the lieutenant told the prosecutor.
The two defendants sped off after pushing the other police sergeant. The sergeant corroborated the lieutenant's statement.
A forensic report showed the lieutenant was left with scratches and a knee injury. Another forensic report showed that the sergeant was also left with bruises in his hand.
The trial has been adjourned to November 25.
