A 36-year-old Jordanian is facing charges after he allegedly forged an Emirati passport to convince an Egyptian woman, a widow with four children, to accept his marriage proposal.
The accused had sent a copy of the Emirati passport to the complainant via WhatsApp to arrange for the marriage ceremony in her country.
After the wedding was solemnised and marriage certificate issued, the complainant approached the UAE consulate in Cairo to get it attested. After examining the passport, the consulate declared that it was "forged" and "the accused is not an Emirati". She found out that the man was a Jordanian working in the UAE.
The complainant decided to file a lawsuit against her husband, so she could get a divorce in the Sharia court.
During the hearing, the woman told the court that she had known the accused through regular communication in social media and that it was he who proposed to her. She said that the man told her that he is an Emirati and owns a big business. He visited her in Egypt, tied the knot with her and then returned, the woman said.
She added she wanted to join him in the UAE. When she approached the consulate for attestation of the marriage certificate, it became clear that the accused was not a UAE citizen, the woman pointed out.
