Two expats have been charged at the Dubai Court of First Instance for allegedly kidnapping a man and taking him to Sharjah, where they held him against his will for six hours.

Dubai public prosecution records show that the two African defendants in their 30s and some accomplices - who are on the run - assaulted the complainant, filmed him and burned him with a lit cigarette.

The main defendant has been detained.

The case dates back to May 7 and was registered at the Bur Dubai police station.

The main defendant reportedly admitted during the investigation that he had planned the crime with an accomplice who is at large. "The complainant's relatives had some prior disputes with my brother back home. I received a threat from my home country that my brother would get killed. Hence I planned to kidnap the complainant and made contact with that accomplice. We also sought help of two other men. Around 8pm on May 7, we went to the complainant's place in a cab driven by the second defendant."

After luring the complainant out of his place, they allegedly tied him up and forced him inside the cab.

They took the complainant to Sharjah, where they assaulted and filmed him. They kept him captive for six hours and then let him go.

The main accused sent two video clips of the assault to his home country.

The complainant identified the two defendants among other suspects at the police station.

The police found a video stored in one of the seized mobile phones, showing a man tied up and being assaulted and burned with a lit cigarette.

The trial has been adjourned to October 18.
