A Dubai visitor, who was caught at the airport as he tried to smuggle 6.1kg of marijuana, has been sentenced to 10 years in jail.
The Dubai Court of First Instance found the 24-year-old Asian man guilty of charges that include importing and possession of illegal drugs. He will be deported after completing his sentence and paying a Dh50,000 fine, the court ruled.
The defendant has been placed in detention since his arrival at the Dubai International Airport (DXB) on March 3. He was apprehended by customs inspectors and then referred to the General Directorate of Anti-Narcotics.
He arrived at DXB's Terminal 3 at 8am, a customs inspector said during the public prosecution investigation. "After his luggage went through the X-ray machine, we searched it and found marijuana stashed inside fabric bags."
Forensics experts confirmed that substance seized was marijuana weighing over 6.1kg. The ruling can be appealed within 15 days from the issuance date.
