An Emirati man has been charged at a Dubai court with physically assaulting two on-duty police officers.

Public prosecution records show that the 37-year-old trader was drunk when he behaved aggressively with the officers and verbally abused them on September 14.

The defendant pushed the cops and threatened them. He told them that he would "beat them up" and that they would see how he would "cause trouble to them". A case was registered at Naif police station.

The public prosecution referred him to trial at the Court of First Instance and requested the strictest legal penalty possible against him.

A police corporal said that he was on patrol duty with a colleague when they were alerted about a problem at a hotel. "It was before 1am. When we reached the scene, we spotted the defendant walking out of the hotel with a woman. Both were apparently drunk. The defendant was bleeding profusely from his hand. We called an ambulance for him."

However, the accused would not want to get inside the ambulance to be treated by the paramedics. "He was screaming and fiercely resisting. We took him inside the police car. He then verbally abused us as he would not want to be handcuffed," the officer told the prosecutor.

The corporal added that he later went to a hospital to get a medical report for a finger injury.

The other policeman gave a similar statement during the prosecution investigation.

According to a medical report, the police corporal was left with pain in his left hand. He has been finding it difficult to twist his left thumb because of the assault.

He will be sentenced on November 17.
