A man and a runaway woman were charged at the Dubai Court of First Instance on Tuesday with assaulting three on-duty police officers.
Prosecutors accused the 26-year-old Iraqi resident and his compatriot accomplice, 29, of behaving in an aggressive manner and using force with the officers.
On July 28, the cops were about to take the man into custody for being drunk while behind the wheel and getting involved in a traffic accident.
According to public prosecution records, the man pushed a police officer and grabbed him by the neck as he resisted being arrested.
His accomplice pulled the officers by their uniforms and scratched the arm of one of them.
The man denied a charge of assaulting on-duty police officers. The woman is standing trial in absentia.
The case was registered at Al Rashidiya Police Station. One of the officers said that he was on patrol duty with a colleague when they were notified about a traffic accident in International City.
"It was a collision between two cars. One of them - a 4WD car - was driven by the Iraqi defendant. He was apparently drunk. We took his papers and pushed his car away from the road, telling him to wait in the police car."
The defendant then claimed to them he wanted to take his belongings from his jeep. "I let him do that. However, he started talking on his mobile phone and was stalling."
It was not long before the defendant's friend arrived in her car.
"She said that we would not take the man in the police car. And if so, she would go too. She then grabbed me by my uniform and pulled me back.
"She also pushed my colleague and pulled him by his uniform. She was trying to stop us from getting her friend inside the police car."
The police corporal and his colleague called for backup and started their car camera.
The male defendant also kept resisting them until other officers arrived and he was brought under control and taken into custody.
The woman then fled the scene. The trial has been postponed to December 9.
