Drunk taxi driver in Dubai abuses on-duty cops, assaults woman

Dubai - The man is also accused of consuming alcohol without a permit.

A taxi driver has been charged at the Dubai Court of First Instance for assaulting and verbally abusing two on-duty police officers.
Public prosecution records show that on November 29 last year, the two officers were responding to a complaint of a female resident, when the drunk 40-year-old Egyptian cabbie behaved aggressively towards them.
The man is also accused of consuming alcohol without a permit. A case was registered at the Bur Dubai police station.
"The woman told us she is a tenant at the flat. Prior to her call, the accused went there and assaulted her. He was drunk," a police corporal told the prosecutor.
The corporal said that the incident happened at a flat in Al Satwa and that the accused would not get inside the patrol car and insulted them. "He pushed and insulted us. We stopped him several times from spitting on us. We brought him under control. We later referred him to the public prosecution on the charges of assaulting police officers, verbal abuse, assault on others' safety and drinking alcohol without a permit."
The police officer said that the accused would not show an ID, saying 'who are you to ask for an ID. I will sleep now'.
The defendant kept insulting the police officers while pushing them and resisting being handcuffed, the corporal recounted.
During police interrogation, the woman said that the defendant grabbed her by the neck and tried to strangle her. But people around took him away from her. She did not give a statement to the public prosecution because she was not willing to move on with the case against the defendant. 
A medical report showed that the woman got bruised in the neck and upper chest because of the assault.
However, she presented an irrevocable waiver, ceding therein her rights to pursue the case.
The trial will resume on February 19.
