Dh1m stolen from house in UAE while family is on holiday
Abu Dhabi - The man said he had a huge family to support back home.
The video footage from the CCTV cameras in the resident's house helped to catch the Asian man, who is now on trial at the Abu Dhabi Appellate Court accused of theft.
Official court documents stated that the man, who connived with another unknown person, planned to carry out the burglary at the home of a GCC national.
Investigations revealed that the Asian man had monitored the home for more than 60 days to find out the movements of the family, especially days when there was no one in the house.
On the day of the burglary, the defendant and his accomplice, who is at large, ensured that no one was in the house as the family had moved out for a short holiday. The men broke into the house and entered into the bedroom. They then broke the safe and took Dh1 million, which had been kept there.
The men, who were wearing gloves, then fled the scene without leaving behind any fingerprints.
The female owner of the house reported to police when she returned home and found when her home had been broken into and her money had been taken away.
The video footage captured by the CCTV cameras, which were in almost every corner of the resident's, home helped authorities identify the thieves.
Prosecutors said the video footage showed the defendant and his accomplice breaking into the home and the safe and running away with the money. The footage also led police to the home of the defendant and the policemen arrested him. The cops also found when the man was hiding the stolen money at his home.
Prosecutors charged him with theft.
During the latest hearing, the man admitted to breaking into the woman's home and stealing the money from the safe.
When the judge asked him why he carried out the burglary, the man replied to him that he is poor and needy and that he was in urgent need for money. The Asian said he has a big family back home to support, including his parents and siblings.
He pleaded to the judge to have mercy on him and also speed up his trial so he can be deported.
The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance had earlier sentenced the Asian to three years in jail followed by deportation. The man, however, challenged the sentence in the Appellate Court.
The trial was adjourned until December.
